Our Classroom and School Expectations: B-R-H
B=Be Safe – Keep hands and feet to yourself, use walking feet, always be safe so that you and other people do not get hurt.
R=Respectful and Responsible – Raise your hand before speaking, listen and follow directions, be kind to
everyone.
H= Honest – Always tell the truth
Classroom Rewards
As a class, the students will be rewarded with marbles in a jar for good behavior. When the marble jar is filled, the class will be rewarded with a special activity such as an extra recess, a movie, or free-time.
1-2-3 Magic
If a student fails to follow the classroom and school expectations, 1-2-3 Magic will be used. 1-2-3 Magic is a simple counting procedure used to help students be aware of their choices and control their behavior. 1 is for a “Warning”. When a student needs to be reminded of the expectations, their clothespin will be moved to a 1. 2 is for “Stop and Think”. This is a second warning. Reminding the child that their behavior is still not appropriate and that if they choose to continue with their behavior, they may be placed on a 3. 3 is for “Take a Break”. When a student is on a 3, they are to sit in a designated spot and think about their choice to not follow the expectations.
If your child follows the classroom and school expectations, they will receive a clean slate certificate and a sticker for their “Sticker Book” at the end of each week.
If a student is placed on a 3 more than once throughout the week, they lose their clean slate award.
Folders
I am providing this daily folder for your child to use throughout the year. If your child has a special folder they would like to use, just place their first and last name on the front of it and they are welcome to use their own. Most folders get pretty wore out after a few months, so keeping an extra folder around is a great idea. It is very important to keep the folder in your child’s backpack and return it to school each day. All communication between school and home is carried in this folder. Corrected class work, notes, homework, etc. will come home in the folder, so it is important to check and empty the folder daily. I also check the folders daily, so it is a great way for you to communicate changes in pick-up arrangements or other messages with me. Please help your child learn to be responsible by helping them remember their folder each day. Thank you for your cooperation.
Homework
Occasionally throughout the year, your child will come home with homework. It will usually be a worksheet from Reading focusing on a letter or word we learned or a Math worksheet with similar material. Homework is an important requirement of kindergarten.
Nicknames
Please let me know if there is another name you would prefer me to call your child and write on their
papers.
Pick-Up Schedule
If your child is not going home in the usual manner, please send a dated note to me or be sure to call the office before 2:30 so they can inform me of the change. I am unable to send a child anywhere except their usual after-school destination without a note from you or the office. Please be sure to call the office and not the classroom for all business changes. There are many days in which I do not have time to check my messages until after school hours and may not receive a message in time.
Thank you.
Attendance
Please call the office to inform the school if your child will not be in attendance. We are learning new skills and reviewing mastered skills daily, so it is very important that your child be here whenever possible. If you know in advance that your child is going to be absent, please let me know and I will send some work home with them.
Gym Shoes
Each child is required to have a pair of gym shoes that stay at school. The shoes do not need to be new; an old pair of shoes is just fine. Students will not be able to participate in gym class without tennis shoes. Also, when winter comes, it is helpful to have shoes at school when children begin wearing boots.
Show and Tell
We will be having Show and Tell on the first Friday on each month. Your child should bring one object to share with the class. This is an important learning experience which can help children gain self-confidence, so please help your child remember to bring one object to Show and Tell. I will try my best to send a reminder each month.
Star Student
During the school year, each student will have the opportunity to be the “Star Student”. You will receive a letter with questions for you to fill out with your child. The questions will focus on your child and their favorite hobbies, pets, and food. You can also include photos of your child’s pet(s), photos of them with family, or any other special photos. I will return all of the photos to you at the end of the week.
Also, I will ask that you help your child find their favorite book to bring in and share with the class. I will send a letter and question sheet home a week before it is your child’s turn so that you have plenty of time to fill it out.
Snacks
Daily snack-time is important to the children. We work on table manners and socializing in an appropriate way. A snack calendar for September is attached to this letter. Your child will be the class leader on the day that he/she is responsible for bringing snack.
PLEASE REMEMBER WE ARE A PEANUT-AWARE SCHOOL.
Some ideas for peanut-free snacks that children enjoy are crackers, pretzels, fruit rollups, pudding cups, applesauce cups, cheese and sausage, vegetables and dip, and fruit. If you wish to send homemade treats, please make sure that no ingredients containing nuts are used.
We will have milk everyday with our snack. The cost is $5.00 for twenty (20) days. Money can be sent in an envelope labeled with your child’s name or you can purchase tickets in the office. You can buy more than one ticket at a time if you wish.
Birthdays
Birthday celebrations are an exciting part of kindergarten. On your child’s birthday, please feel free to send a birthday treat. I have arranged for each child’s snack day to be as close as possible to their birthday. Summer birthdays will be celebrated in May.
